The power utility has approached the courts to review the National Energy Regulator of South Africa's decision to deduct a R69 billion bailout from Eskom's approved revenue for the current tariff period.

CAPE TOWN - Eskom on Tuesday said it must hike consumer tariffs to avert a complete financial meltdown.

The parastatal said this meant it would need steeper tariff hikes from the approved 8.1% this financial year to 16%. The energy regulator’s decision to classify government’s R69 billion bailout to Eskom as revenue means Eskom will get less from consumers.Eskom's Hasha Tlhotlhalemaje said that besides increased tariffs this year, it would also need more than the 5.2% hike approved for next year.

"And this 5.23% increase, which 2.2% is accounted for by independent power producers, leaves Eskom with a 3% nominal increase. Now any household, let alone Eskom, cannot function that way." She said Eskom remained well aware of the financial situation of consumers but stressed the company needed to be sustainable.

What's new? Every year is the same old story. This is just getting too old now. pissed-off

I agree. A fat increase in executive bonuses, and job cuts will also achieve this.

Away with Eskom R69bil is crazy!! Imagine what you can do for the poor!! Let private companies step in, generate clean energy and take us into the future.

Hell no! Eskom what you need is to down paying bonuses to management who can't solve your problems. You've been on a financial breakdown that nothing to do with the taxpayers

Let it meltdown.

Give Eskom to people who KNOW how to run it and don't STEAL. 😘

How about collecting your money from those delinquent Sowetans.

Mxm! F'tshek eskom

Eskom_SA How about reducing the bloated workforce first? This helps with freeing up cash. Then work on being financially efficient.

Two words for you Eskom and the second one is ‘off’ !

Eskom cannot increase tariffs due to lost revenue from load shedding, lost revenue from municipal and Zimbabwe debt, coal contracts Eskom has agreed to pay many times the international price of coal and no burning diesel. No bailout should be allowed for stupidity or corruption.

So that there are more to steal and still next year ask for more to steal they want to steal till no more to steal

To be sustainable cut out the middle man, clean up your contracts, fire all the dead wood, generate, transmission & distribute. Eskom in recent have not done any work and only relied on the tax payers to bail tem out... Start working!

Eskom its crazy they need to just cut cost finsh and klaar.

Will tariffs be collected from non paying customers first

Eskom has so far not shown us what they are doing to become more profitable. Reduce payroll costs, renegotiate coal contracts, collect debt from municipalities and government departments, reduce wastage, improve productivity, etc. etc.

So what, I have gas and candles

Go ahead and melt down. Private sector will make it’s own plans.

No, they need better management

No more.

Fusek

Go and get the money that was stolen

Another state-owned parasite

Batsheleni badakiwe, ugesi uvele ubiza kanje

Did they recover any monies that was looted from them? Till then no bailouts for them PERIOD!!!!

All thanks to Pravin Jamnandas

Means they want to buy more electric cars.....

NO, no more!!!

Go ask the theives gupta and zuma
