LARGE parts of Europe have experienced a somewhat unusual development in the first half of this year in the electricity market: negative prices. The situation has come about due to the explosive growth of renewable energy generation, with solar being the main culprit in this case. At the same time, there has been a significant drop in energy demand.
RE generators that are contractually obliged to sell their power have had to essentially give it away or pay for distributors to take it, and the price crunch has spilled over to affect other generators, as well.
