As the temperature climbs across the country, many are starting to switch on their fans for some respite. However, there are concerns about how effective fans can be.
The sensation of feeling cooler in front of a fan is due to the rapid evaporation of sweat on our skin when exposed to fast-moving air, similar to how blowing on hot food or drink accelerates its cooling. It's surprising, but the World Health Organisation has previously advised against using electric fans during periods of extreme heat.
While research on this topic is limited, the WHO has warned that electric fans could potentially increase the body's workload and stress as it tries to cool down. However, a recent study indicates that using a fan, even in extreme heat, is perfectly safe. However, in hot and dry environments, fans were found to actually raise body temperature. "Fans at any temperature up to 104F, where there is some kind of humidity, are beneficial," Jay explained.
