As global lead scientist for freshwater, I work across WWF’s network and with external partners to integrate scientific research into strategies for river conservation and sustainable energy development. My recent research has focused on the economic, financial and environmental dimensions of hydropower development and operation.

Perhaps nobody in the fields of environmental science and advocacy has delivered more value to society by communicating science than Rachel Carson. This week marks the 60anniversary of her passing, so here I’d like to focus on the profound impact she had on people and the planet through science communication.

Beyond its influence on environmental regulation, the book has been broadly recognized as one of the primary catalysts for the environmental movementis the highest ranked book on environmental issues). That is an incredible legacy and demonstration of the power of words – because, ultimately, that is what Carson had to work with.did not use photographs and Carson obviously had no social media presence or access to podcasts. Just powerful writing that moved people to change the world.

Her words also reveal her deep love of nature that allows the book to resonate beyond its important, but admittedly technocratic, themes. Though she discusses the implications of toxins for human health and anticipates utilitarian concepts such as ecosystem services,is underlain by a nature that transcends material well-being; it is the fundamental source of inspiration and refuge.
