Highland Gold Maple making syrup from Cape Breton woods for 25 years | SaltWire #capebreton #mapleCORNER BROOK, N.L. — Zita Hinks was in shock when SaltWire told her that World Energy GH2 had received approval from Environment Minister Bernard Davis for its proposed wind energy project in western Newfoundland.
She was part of a group of protesters involved in a court challenge of an injunction granted to World Energy GH2 in February 2023 to prevent protests at a site where the company was installing MET towers in Mainland. Hinks said she is hopeful that the Environmental Transparency Committee, a group she has supported and been active with in the past, will have a plan. Now that the project has been given approval, Jasen Benwah hopes the relationship that has been built between Indigenous leaders and World Energy GH2 will continue and be strong.
That work means young people may not have to move away for work and that others may return home, which will help with the declining population, he said. “Project Nujio’qonik has undergone a rigorous environmental review process and has proven to be an environmentally responsible project that will also bring substantial benefits to Energy NL members and the entire province of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Gerry Mayo, chair of the Energy NL board of directors.
