Congressman Joaquin Castro announced Tuesday that the City of San Antonio will receive a $30 million federal grant to launch a groundbreaking solar energy project.
The grant stems from the Inflation Reduction Act, a landmark piece of legislation championed by Congressman Castro in 2022. This act provided tax-exempt entities, including cities, with access to direct cash payments for clean energy projects. Cost Savings: San Antonio is expected to save between $7 million and $11 million over the next 25 years due to the reduced reliance on traditional energy sources.
The project offers additional benefits beyond energy savings. Twenty-three of the planned installations will be parking canopies, providing shade and protection from hail for vehicles and pedestrians.
