Honda and Isuzu have agreed to start a feasibility study to see if they can go into a strategic partnership to develop electric vehicles. The two companies aim to be more competitive when it comes to costs by standardizing core components for EVs. The study comes on the back of the continual EV push from manufacturers in China. According to reports, the two companies wanted to cooperate after feeling lag in pushing out EVs to go against brands like BYD and Chery.
Toshihiro Mibe, president of Honda, expressed concern about emerging companies becoming competitive quickly and the possibility of Japanese automotive companies being shaken out. Despite having investments in storage battery plants and other facilities for EVs, Japanese brands like Honda are lagging in EV manufacturing. If the partnership between Honda and Isuzu expands further in the future, it may alter the market share of top manufacturers in the auto industry in Japan
