The Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday said the country’s power supply during the dry months, when demand usually goes up, is adequate despite the threat of El Niño that would render hydroelectric power plants unavailable.

The Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday said the country’s power supply during the dry months, when demand usually goes up, is adequate despite the threat of El Niño that would render hydroelectric power plants unavailable. Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla stated that although the dams had good water supply at the start of the period, the use of power had to be limited due to increased irrigation needs in the agriculture sector.

The Energy Department projected a reduction of up to 70% in the generation capacity of hydroelectric power plants, particularly in Luzon and Visayas grids. However, Lotilla assured that the Philippines is more prepared for El Niño compared to previous years
