Already a subscriber?The Albanese government’s surprise climate appointee Matt Kean has been accused of treachery after he poured cold water onMr Kean, whoin the previous NSW Liberal government, and who was once positively disposed towards nuclear power, announced last week he was quitting politics.
“We looked at all options, including nuclear. In fact, we looked at all options and made decisions based on economics and engineering,” Mr Kean said.“The advice that I received at the time which was most compelling was from the chief scientist of NSW, Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte. In 2021, when asked about the development of small modular reactors, he told Sky News “I think so, and I hope so” that nuclear power could be part of the mix by the mid-2030s.
But for the second time in less than a fortnight, Mr Albanese declined to guarantee that the target would be announced before the election, which is due by May 2025 at the latest. This has made the 2035 target, speculated to be between 65 per cent and 75 per cent, much more politically sensitive.
