Amid cost overruns and climate concerns, the $34-billion Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project has finally opened, with oil-and-gas advocate Dan McTeague saying the project shows the 'vital' importance of pipelines in getting this country's fuel reserves to market as demand for energy increases globally. Experts have also expressed concerns that this pipeline project may be the last in Canada.

president Barack Obama’s rejection of the $9-billion project in November 2015 based on “extensive public outreach and consultation” which found it would fail to lower gas prices, and would not increase the country’s energy security. But although the project was revived by Obama's successor Donald Trump in 2017, it ultimately suffered from what TransCanada—later renamed TC Energy—saw as increased legal challenges, including an order from the Supreme Court to halt all Keystone XL work.
