Coalition MPs are strongly in favour of nuclear energy – but they’re not so sure about where to put the power plants.

Twelve opposition MPs have publicly backed lifting the moratorium on nuclear power in Australia but will not commit to hosting a nuclear power plant in their own electorate.

Opposition climate change and energy spokesman Ted O’Brien, who has played a key role in designing the forthcoming policy and who backs nuclear power to ensure Australia meets its emissions-reduction targets, has repeatedly stopped short of endorsing a power station in his Sunshine Coast seat of Fairfax.

Every federal Coalition MP approached by this masthead supported the policy of lifting the moratorium on nuclear power and potentially introducing the technology to Australia but, like Ted O’Brien and McIntosh, all of them also were cautious or non-committal about it being in their seat and emphasised the need for their constituents to be on board first.

“We have bipartisan support for nuclear submarines at sea; I think it’s reasonable we have a conversation about nuclear on land.” Goodenough said he had a small, densely populated electorate and that his seat “is not ideal for a nuclear power station”. Llew O’Brien said it would be up to the voters in his electorate to make the decision but “I personally would not have an issue with it”.Birrell said he supported Australia reaching net zero emissions and that to get there, nuclear should be in the energy mix but cautioned “the experts say the appropriate places are where existing coal stations are and that’s not in my seat of Nicholls”.
