Two dead after incident on Cork Road early on Thursday morning

A second teenager has died after sustaining injuries in a crash with a bus while riding an escooter in the early hours of Thursday morning in Waterford. While the boy driving the scooter was pronounced dead at the scene, the other teenager survived the immediate aftermath of the crash and was taken to hospital.

The boy who died at the scene, and who was driving the escooter, lived locally and it is understood he was 15 years of age.Former Dublin GAA star Diarmuid Connolly avoids conviction for ‘unprovoked’ New Year’s Eve attackWho is ahead in the US presidential campaign? “A second male youth in his teens, who was also travelling on the escooter was taken to Waterford University Hospital with serious injuries. He passed away from his injuries earlier this afternoon.” They were particularly keen to speak to road users on the Cork Road in Waterford City between 1.45am and 2.15am to contact Waterford Garda station.

The Mayor of Waterford Cllr Joe Kelly earlier described the first teenager’s death as a “tragedy”, whilst calling for more stringent escooter regulations to be put in place following a surge in the popularity of such vehicles on Irish roads. He said that escooter users are “the most vulnerable road users”.
