Executives say Chinese carmakers are not selling EVs in Europe as fast as they expected, turning ports into car parks.

Imported vehicles are piling up at European ports, turning them into “car parks” as automakers and distributors struggle with a slowdown in sales and logistical bottlenecks including the lack of truck drivers.

One car logistics expert said many of the unloaded vehicles were simply staying in the ports until they were sold to distributors or end users.Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association, said “inland shipping in European markets is difficult” . BLG Logistics, the company that operates the car-handling terminal at the German port of Bremerhaven, Europe’s second-busiest port for vehicles, said it had experienced longer dwell times at its facilities after Germany’s federal government stopped subsidising purchases of EVs in December last year.

As newcomers to the market, they have struggled to find haulage companies to prioritise their orders.

Electric Vehicle Sales in Australia Show No Growth in Market ShareNew figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries reveal that the proportion of electric vehicles (EVs) sold in Australia has not increased despite an increase in sales. In March, 9.5% of all new vehicles sold were EVs, slightly down from 9.6% in February. However, this is still an improvement from March 2023 when EVs made up only 6.8% of the market. The sales of EVs in Australia seem to reflect global trends, with other countries also experiencing a plateau in EV sales.
