Already a subscriber?Stefan Frauscher knows a thing or two about electric boats. The company he now runs built its first floating EV in 1955. Still, Frauscher says the latest effort is a complete game changer.
Frauscher boss Stefan Frauscher aboard the new powerboat, which retails for about $US600,000 plus taxes. The Fantom has superb finishing, beautiful woodwork, and even high-end audio. It has stern drive and is fitted with bow thrusters for manoeuvrability. The company says it is designed to be easily upgradable if the performance of the batteries is depleted over time, or new technology provides a lighter, more energy-dense solution. There is just one motor but the 400 kW peak power was enough to push the boat to 100 km/h in testing. Production versions have been limited to 85 km/h.
What’s more, you could have a conversation while doing it. The boat is not completely silent, but I was told most of the noise is from the two counter-rotating propellers. The battery sustains more violence than in a car, particularly in rough seas, so there’s extra shock absorbance built into the system.
Boating’s blissfully quiet thanks to the single Porsche electric motor powered by a 100 kWh battery pack.
