With more and more people making the switch to an EV, and more brands on offer, what are the key considerations for drivers?

A few years ago, choosing an electric car was pretty straightforward: you went for a Tesla. That’s what nearly 90 per cent of Australians did, having determined that the sparse alternatives were too dear or simply not good enough.. They are mostly from new Chinese brands, but there are the likes of Cupra from Spain, while even US icon Cadillac will soon offer us an electric SUV.

Add to that a flood of new models coming in, over-production in China , plus Elon Musk’s determination to maintain sales volumes no matter what, and it’s easy to believe we are in for a wild ride on the price front.are either here or imminent. You might prefer to stick with a well-known Euro badge like MG. Except MG is now fully owned by the Chinese too, while BMW, Volvo, Tesla, Kia and other familiar brands now build BEVs there.

Sure, it’s an absolute necessity for those travelling big distances as our national charging infrastructure is still nowhere near good enough. However, if you charge at home or work, and rarely venture outside the city, the smaller battery is the wise choice. PHEVs have been largely shunned by Australian buyers until now, partly because they are seen as expensive, complicated and fiddly . There are plenty of other compromises, including the cost of maintaining two drive systems.
