The Minister of State for Environment, Dr Iziaq Kunle Salako, has called for collective commitment in fostering a sustainable environment in Nigeria, saying the federal government requires strong stakeholders' support to combat the challenges of climate change.

R-L The Ogun State Vice Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations , Waheed Ogunjobi, the Director-General, Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria , Prof. Zacharia Yaduma, who represented Minister of State for Environment, and President, Landscape Horticulturist Association of Nigeria , Mr Sanya Falemu, at the tree planting exercise to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of NIPR held at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta on Saturday.

Represented by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria , Professor Zacharia Yaduma, the minister stressed the need for concerted efforts to reduce carbon footprint in the country and improve the health of its ecosystem. “Today, as we celebrate this aiamond anniversary, let us renew our pledge to protect and enhance our natural heritage. Let us work together to ensure that our forests remain lush, our rivers flow clean, our gutters waste free and our air stays pure.”

“In these 60 years of establishing growth for the profession and enhancing public image in Nigeria, your organisation has witnessed remarkable progress and must have also faced formidable challenges, but through it all, your dedication to nurturing our land and preserving its beauty for future generations has never wavered,” he remarked.

The governor, who was represented by the Head of Service, Mr Kehinde Onasanya, noted that the NIPR was planting for posterity as the trees would outlive the current generation. Earlier in his remark, the MAPOLY Rector, Dr. Adeoye Odedeji, said the polytechnic was excited to partner with the NIPR and assured that the Diamond Anniversary Green Park would be nurtured as a unit in the institution for the present and future generations.
