AI has led to an explosion in demand for renewable energy, and the same time, it's shaping the future of Utilities.

The development of AI models and natural language processing is leading to an explosive demand for power, and the utilities industry is stepping up to the challenge. Four experts shared AI use cases shaping the industry at theaccording to Sustainalytics ESG Risk Rating, related the “aha” moment of a CIO of a company that only made lipstick. Until recently, that CIO professed lipstick would never be digital, but it turns out he was wrong.

“Germany doesn’t have the necessary infrastructure for hydrogen, but we do have 1.6 million documents, some handwritten, about the construction of gas pipelines over the past 100 years,” he explained. “You can’t process all that documentation manually, so we trained AI models to extract key information on pipeline elements and identify which could be reused for hydrogen infrastructure.”

OGE is training an AI model using computer vision and process data to detect anomalies along pipelines and flag issues for inspection using drones or helicopters. It created a “hydrogen brain” tool to optimize hydrogen production and consumption using AI, which is integrated with the SAP Green Token solution, a chain of custody solution to track co-mingled materials. OGE also runs regular “promptathons” to involve employees in developing AI solutions..
