The Prime Minister's announcement on March 12 of new gas-fired power plants may seem counter-intuitive for energy security and emissions goals at first glance.
The key is understanding the role these plants will play. They are not intended for constant baseload power, but rather as a supplemental backup to bridge gaps when renewable sources like wind and solar lack sufficient output. Chris Allan, service and technical director at The Electric Heating Company said: "Gas plants are a flexible partner for scaling up renewable power. They can quickly ramp up and down to fill gaps, preventing household outages while avoiding over-reliance on dirty coal plants."
In the meantime, The Electric Heating Company says that bolstering domestic energy security with these gas plants could help stabilise overall electricity prices by reducing the UK's vulnerability to global fuel market volatility.
