The Fianna Fail politician also came under fire over the weekend for giving humanity’s biggest challenge passing notice at the party conference after replacing Leo Varadkar

New Taoiseach Simon Harris has been urged to move climate action to the top of his agenda after the crisis got one mention in his first Dail speech as Ireland’s leader.

. The Irish Mirror understands a part of that speech, which went into a bit more detail on the climate emergency, was cut as time was running short on the live broadcast. But Friends of the Earth has urged Mr Harris, as the country’s youngest ever Taoiseach, to put the burning issue worrying young people up and down the country at the heart of his leadership.

The charity’s chief, Oisin Coghlan, said: “While we are making progress, we are still not dealing with climate as the emergency it is."Last year was the warmest year since records began because of fossil fuel emissions while Ireland has just suffered one of its wettest Marches in history, putting food production at risk.“We need to see him embracing the challenge.

“We need a State led system change that makes the least polluting options accessible and available and affordable for everybody.“He’s a 37-year-old - the youngest ever Taoiseach of Ireland.“They feel it more than the rest of us and it’s impacting them emotionally and of course they have to live with the consequences of it.Join the Irish Mirror’s breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive breaking news and the latest headlines direct to your phone.
