The Warm Home Prescription programme pays to heat the homes of low-income patients to avoid the cost of hospital care if they became more ill. A successful pilot project was run in Aberdeen last year which saw 500 households in the city take part. A panel of experts on fuel poverty now believes it should be rolled-out to other parts of the country. It comes after fuel poverty figures hit a 12-year high this month with increasing numbers of Scots struggling to pay their energy bills.

A panel of experts on fuel poverty now believes it should be rolled-out to other parts of the country. Matthew Cole, chair of the Scottish Fuel Poverty advisory panel, said: "The Warm Homes Prescription scheme is a brilliant example of an innovative way to offer help to those most impacted by fuel poverty. "In 2020 an estimated 10,000 people, across the UK, died as a result of living in cold homes, which is a shocking statistic. Millions more with health conditions such as respiratory and cardio-vascular disease are at particular risk of harm from cold homes. "More schemes like this are needed to help people who are struggling due to the cost-of-living crisis and crippling fuel bills."
