Fifth-generation petrol-electric system to be combined with fourth-generation of BYD’s ePlatform

BYD is looking to break the 1200-mile range barrier with successors to its existing petrol-electric models, which are set to adopt a fifth-generation plug-in hybrid system and a fourth-generation electric vehicle architecture, according to sources close to the Chinese car maker. The new range-busting plug-in hybrid system, elements of which are expected to be revealed at the upcoming 2024 Beijing motor show, is an evolution of BYD’s DM set-up used extensively throughout its line-up.

4L/100km for an overall range of up to 715 miles on the China light-duty vehicle test cycle test cycle. The fuel tank capacity is 60-litres. The initial version of BYD’s fifth-generation plug-in hybrid system set to be launched in 2025 models is claimed to build on the strengths of the existing DM-i system with key developments brought to its combustion engine and electric motor as well as its battery, which is set to offer greater energy content.
