. And they might be right, of course—there's a heated debate in the automotive media about whether its hybrid-focused transition plan is sensible or window dressing. But Toyota's EV concept game is strong, and has been since the blowback started a couple years ago and the company responded
So, whether Toyota will actually jump into BEVs more seriously than its bZ4X, it's at least talking about interesting EVs. And teasing them. In the next few days, at the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota will reveal more EV concepts—and the most interesting of the two teased here is the GR-badged, fully electric sports car known as the FT-Se. , with some different specific details.
For what it's worth, Toyota says the FT-Se is a high-performance BEV that prioritizes handling and aerodynamic performance. Toyota also says it'll expand its capabilities through software updates, thus fitting into the software-defined vehicle mold. The cockpit features a yoke that looks a bit like a racing steering wheel, flanked by small panels with various functions and a main instrument screen set closer to the windshield.
The Tokyo Motor Show starts later this month, and we'll see these cars fully revealed then—and hopefully gain some insight into whether Toyota might actually produce anything resembling them. With all the noise of late about loud voices inside Toyota clamoring for a new Celica, maybe we can read this concept as one step along the path of exploring how a fully electric GR-badged sports car might take form.
