As investigators probe how the deadly Maui wildfire spread, one thing is clear: Hawaiian Electric's right-of-way was unkempt for years despite high risk.

The Hawaiian Islands do see wildfire from time to time, but the catastrophic Maui fires were spawned by a striking mix of factors, including climate change.Fiske said fire crews attacked the fire with water at both ends of the gully, but winds were so strong that embers flew over their heads, lighting a field of tall grass behind them.

Within about 20 minutes, the fire had moved through the field and jumped the four-lane Lahaina Bypass, igniting homes on the other side. From there, it burned through Lahaina’s historic downtown all the way to the ocean, moving so quickly that many residents were forced to jump into the sea to escape.
