Australia’s energy market operator is forecasting increased risks of power outages starting this summer, in its latest outlook for the next decade.to the industry and governments that they need to sharpen their efforts to deliver on the energy transition, by pointing to the potential gaps in supply if they don’t.
That was the last El Nino summer. Much of the world has declared El Nino after a horror northern summer. The bureau says it looks likely but is yet to declare one for Australia.Age and heat can combine to cause coal and gas turbines to fail. AEMO says such “unplanned outages” are more likely after recent poor performance.
AEMO expects 3.4 gigawatts more generation and storage to be available this summer than last summer, but that hasn’t been enough to counter other factors such as more heat, and increased demand due to electrification of appliances and cars. Unfortunately, “solutions which orchestrate and co-ordinate consumers’ generation and storage devices to support reliability have not yet demonstrated success at significant scale”.EVs and other reasons for more demand
