'Nature needs us to accelerate our help if we want to enjoy it for generations to come.' ✍️ theresecoffey for ipaperviews

The world has acted on tackling climate change but for too long, nature was on the sidelines and treated as the Cinderella

Conservatives want to leave our environment in a better state than we inherited. We have made some good. Air is cleaner, as is the water which we enjoy. We have put the spotlight on problems and are forcing industry to act. We have started the transformation of financial support for landowners and farmers – the original friends of the earth – on whose stewardship we rely for a green and pleasant land as well as the food on our plates.

However, nature has been taken for granted for too long, used freely as a resource with little thought for the consequences. It is under immense pressure and. We have to reverse that. We have to respect and protect nature. I know there is much more to do to restore nature and to level with you, some of these challenges are harder to fix than we might all hope. That is why today, I am publishing our. It includes all the targets – short-term and long-term.

In government we are embedding nature in the heart the decisions we take, guided by the environmental principals we have set out – through a duty for every part of government to help to conserve and enhance biodiversity. We have to accelerate and step up on many fronts. I am determined to use the levers and powers I have to make this a decade of delivery with target-led, targeted actions, monitored by data and dashboards, intervening further wherever needed.

This is a national endeavour. It needs your help as well as that of local councils, agencies and government. While the Covid pandemic, it hindered our progress to a re-use and recycle society. Recycling rates have fallen and we need to get back on track. I am keen to work with councils to do even more to clean up our air, make our streets litter-free and make recycling easier and simpler.
