Doug Ford’s inaction on electric vehicles leaves Ontarians paying the price with their health. Electric vehicles are an effective and popular solution to many of the most pressing problems. Opinion by joannakyriazis

straight, Ontarians breathed in smog-filled air while temperatures soared. Over the course of the year, a total of 53 smog advisories were issued in the province. The reason was simple: Ontario took action. The province shuttered its coal power plants, eliminating hundreds of thousands of tons of air pollution. It also used vehicle emissions testing to get older, more polluting vehicles off the road.

Transport remains one of the biggest contributors to poor air quality in Ontario. Tailpipe fumes have beento a myriad of medical conditions, from asthma to cancer to heart disease, with children, seniors and lower-income communities often most severely affected. The sector is also the province’s highest-emitting when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions.

The best solution is to ditch tailpipes altogether; battery electric vehicles are a great way to do that. A 2020that every gas car swapped for an electric version on GTHA roads came with around $10,000 in social benefits. Through policy, provinces like B.C. and Quebec have proactively gotten more electric cars on their roads. In B.C., 13 per cent of new cars sold last year were electric. Across Canada, it was five per cent. But in Ontario, the number was a pitiful three per cent — which is behind even the Yukon.

Ontario’s poor EV performance is of its government’s own making. When Ford first took office, he cancelled the province’s EV rebate program,

Electric vehicles will not save the planet

What do we do when the grid goes down? Infrastructure does not support EV

What a load of shit - over simplification.

too bad they COST A SMALL FORTUNE

Does Ontario have enough green electricity for EVs? How about harsh winters?

This isn’t Doug’s fault. This article is just crap.

so do you just keep reposting to get rid of the comments you don't like? thought just announced major investment in EV production. Jobs and investment pretty good huh. despite it seems that EV production causes more pollution than fossil fuel. any facts on that?

But electric vehicles don’t solve the one critical problem of cities today. Congestion. Replacing all t he gas-powered cars with EVs can’t address that. To have enough density we must find other modes to get around t he city.

Effective?

Gtfo of here, getting rid of leftist politicians is the only solution for Canadians

Electric cars have a larger carbon footprint and environmental impact than conventional vehicles. Not to mention they are prohibitively expensive.

It is not feasible or sustainable, the power grids will not be able to handle it, Factor in most households have more than one vehicle, now factor in the time it takes to recharge, the stress on the Grid , Canada wide, get ready for power outages

joannakyriazis Ev? Who the fuck can afford one?

joannakyriazis Fuck right off

joannakyriazis I cant read this article but i safely assume it is stupid

joannakyriazis Do your homework. EVs are not the answer. Soaring costs of EVs, massively expensive to repair and replace batteries. Mining for materials for batteries is more harmful than oil. Electrical grid is not ready. Massive charges/increases to homeowners for upgrades.

joannakyriazis This article is absurd, and I'm an EV driver. It's going to take decades to transition off petrol. And in many circumstances, EVs aren't useful or capable. Nevermind limited availability. Blaming Ford is just silly, this isn't journalism. This is partisan grasping at straws.

joannakyriazis Toronto Star Not tooo liberal -lol

joannakyriazis Evs are nothing but hyped up junk. Total waste of money.

joannakyriazis Not enough long term information that they are a good idea... no one has been able to safe that the batteries are not a hazard to our world over long term, howich is a replacement battery, like expectancy of battery, and so on

joannakyriazis Health?

joannakyriazis Misinformation

joannakyriazis At least we're on the right track!

joannakyriazis For someone who bitched and moaned about the 'war on cars' in the city of Toronto and as someone who wants to waste billions on new highways, his decisions about electric cars certainly are baffling.
