For many catching the occasional news story from this year’s United Nations climate conference in Madrid, the most lasting impression is that nations once again failed to agree on how to work together to effectively face the climate crisis. Despite this setback there was much more to see and to learn and much that gives me hope.
People across B.C. — especially youth — are standing up for strong action and accountability on climate change. I’ve seen it in the faces of young climate strikers I met in Victoria last spring and summer. I’ve seen it in the faces of people I met at Vancouver’s climate marches earlier this year. When more than 100,000 people joined millions more around the globe to make their voices heard, it was a clear signal.
Here in B.C., people want to know what we can do to seize the many opportunities ahead for a better future. B.C. businesses are doing their part and have responded to carbon pricing, in place since 2008, by producing commodities and products that are among the lowest carbon intensity in the world. We’re building on this work by teaming up to establish our province as a recognized world leader in low-carbon goods and technologies and committing to keep B.C. businesses competitive with jurisdictions yet to price carbon.
