A CONSUMER group on Monday said that attempts to rush the franchise renewal of Manila Electric Co. have raised suspicion on its ultimate objective. The United Filipino Consumers and Commuters said that the push to renew Meralco's franchise comes four years ahead of its expiry, at a time when customers are reeling from the weight of surging electricity rates.Rodolfo Javellana Jr., UFCC president, said that lawmakers pushing for early renewal seem to be doing Meralco's bidding.
'As long as oligarchs have control of power generation, transmission, and distribution, the government and all electric consumers in the country are being held hostage by Meralco.'Javellana slammed some legislators for seemingly working for Meralco's interests and acting as its spokespersons.
