Earthquakes on the East Coast are rare but sea level rise and frequent flooding may lead to a higher frequency of quakes. Janti Soeripto, president of Save the Children, was speaking to the UN Security Council about humanitarian aid in Gaza in front of when a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck Friday morning. Long periods of flooding can cause water levels to rise leading to possible landslides. Those slides can"lubricate" faults and may account for a higher frequency of quakes, explained Dr. Marsellos.

Large earthquakes occur at fault zones, or areas of fracture in the Earth's crust, where the rock will break. Most dangerous fault areas are on the West Coast, including California and Washington state.
