In 2021, MIT researchers discovered a new type of superconducting magnet for fusion reactors. More than two years of testing showed it can work be used commercially.A new type of superconducting magnet developed by researchers at the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at the Massachusetts Insitute of Technology two years ago is ready to be used in fusion reactors.
In the case of REBCO, the tape was left bare, and the greater conductivity allowed current to flow through the material. By eliminating the insulation, the team was able to develop a low-voltage system that is easier to fabricate. The approach also leaves more room for other applications, such as cooling or adding structures for strength, a press release said.
