Martin Lewis urges families to read their energy meters this week – here's what you need to know to avoid being overcharged

Good news! Energy prices are about to fall for most households across the UK. On 1 July, the Energy Price Cap will plummet by 7% a year for a typical household.

If you are on this type of tariff, what you don't want is any discrepancies in the amount you're charged on the lower rate. After so many rises in price it's good news the costs are falling. But it's worth noting that some households will gain and others lose against what their supplier would have estimated. But as we saw in March 2022 if all of us rush to do this on the same day, it can lead to suppliers' websites crashing and phone lines becoming jammed. Most providers also let you send the information in a text message or WhatsApp. Or you can call them up and use an automated service.
