Hybrid sales pick up, according to latest CSO data, as consumer wariness mounts around wanting EV infrastructure and cuts to grants

Sales of electric cars in the State have fallen by 20 per cent in the first five months of 2024 compared with the same period last year after another decline in the number of battery-driven vehicles sold in May, the Central Statistics Office has said.

Industry groups have speculated that inadequate charging infrastructure in parts of the country coupled with the Government’s decision to slash the electric vehicles grant from €5,000 to €3,500 last year are contributing to the drop-off. Hybrid vehicles sales, meanwhile, appear to be plugging the gap for consumers. Sales of petrol and electric hybrids climbed 49 per cent in the first five months of 2024 compared with the same period last year, according to the figures, from 9,864 to 14,712.
