People living in a draughty home have been paying considerably more to stay warm

Research has found that some households are paying up to £340 more on their energy bills because their homes are not insulated well enough.

People living in poorly insulated homes are paying roughly 50 per cent more on heating than those living in properties that meet government environmental targets, the research has found.Analysis from the Energy and Climate Change Intelligence Unit found the average annual gas bill will be around £340 higher per year for homes with an EPC score of F, even with the new energy price cap, which comes into effect from today .

You can check EPC ratings for domestic properties online by searching your postcode on gov.uk here. Properties get a rating from A to G and a score. The better the rating and score, the lower your energy bills are likely to be. “Unless we start to use less gas, we’ll just have to import more from abroad as the North Sea continues its inevitable decline, regardless of new licences.”The ECIU said that a little over a decade ago there were considerably more homes being insulated every year in the UK. Compared to the period before changes made by then prime minister David Cameron, there has been a 95 per cent drop in the number of insulation measures.
