Australia’s peak motoring organisation has called for an “equitable” system of road user charges consistent across all levels of taxpayers, in the wake of a recent High Court which ruled against a Victorian tax on electric vehicles.

On Wednesday, the court found Victoria’s of a per kilometre mandatory levy on low and zero emission EVs was unconstitutional as states did not have the jurisdiction to impose a duty of excise, which only the Commonwealth does.

“If we want our road user charging, our motoring tax regime to be either sustainable or equitable, we’ve got big changes coming.” “We want to work with the Victorians and with the other states and territories on policy relating to electric vehicles,” Mr Chalmers said at a press conference in Canberra.

But Mr Bradley outlined that encouraging EV purchases and charging EV drivers road levies did not have to be an exclusive process and could easily be achieved simultaneously.
