Most EVs are still costly, but smart shoppers can choose models that can pay off over time with lower ownership costs in addition to being more environmentally benign.

Maintenance costs in 25 out of 27 models were found to be less costly than conventional vehicles because EVs eliminate over two-dozen mechanical components that would normally require periodic service. An EV owner avoids having to pay for things like oil changes, cooling system flushes, transmission servicing and replacing the air filter, spark plugs and drive belts.

Insurance premiums are also a bit higher on average than with ICE models, if for no other reason than an EV’s battery pack can be staggeringly expensive to replace should the vehicle get into a wreck. Licensing fees are also often costlier to help compensate for the fact that EVs contribute zero gasoline taxes to a state’s coffers.

And since many buyers decide to go electric for the sake of their emissions-free operation, the company determined the environmental impact of the EVs considered by analyzing the greenhouse gases created in the process of generating the electricity that keeps their batteries charged.
