The multinational chemicals company with headquarters in Houston said it reached an agreement with French engineering and technology company Technip Energies as well as Houston chemical company Chevron Phillips Chemical to design, build and operate a"demonstration unit" at its Channelview site.LyondellBasell said Thursday it plans to pilot an electric furnace at its Channelview facility as it works to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted from its operations.

The multinational chemicals company with headquarters in Houston said it reached an agreement with French engineering and technology company Technip Energies as well as Houston chemical company Chevron Phillips Chemical to design, build and operate a"demonstration unit" at the site. If successful, the new technology could enable LyondellBasell to use renewable electricity as a heat source for the chemical"cracking" process that breaks hydrocarbons into key chemicals such as ethylene — the most energy-intensive part of the plant — and help it reach ambitious climate targets.
