Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King has emphatically backed carbon capture and storage as the best way for the resources industry to reach net zero emissions, but stopped short of reversing a freeze on project funding to accelerate the roll-out of the technology.
Low hopes for the federal budget to offer fresh funding for carbon capture and storage were confirmed last week. There was – as expected – no reversal ofwhich put several early-stage ventures in doubt. APPEA president Meg O’Neill, the chief executive of Woodside Energy, said carbon capture and utilisation works and will be central to cutting emissions. She said some critics had been too quick to judge.
“Our gas industry is well-placed to be that partner and develop CCUS, given our expertise in geological storage and large infrastructure projects.”
