The recent shortage of electricity and spike in energy prices are the results of several mitigating factors, not because of the closure of the Liddell Power Station, says Energy Edge Managing Director Joshua Stabler.

The announcement to close the power station was made in 2015, “so this is a plan that’s been eight years in the making”, Mr Stabler told Sky News Australia.

“The market has known about this … there’s been no point at which the market in its liquid form hasn’t known that Liddell would be offline for this quarter and next quarter.” “Different points in time during 2022 we had 42 per cent of coal generators shut in New South Wales offline … Liddell was part of that but also outages across all of the other major coal generators in NSW.”

What factors then? You literally only mentioned the power plant closure, and nothing else.

'there’s been no point at which the market in its liquid form hasn’t known that Liddell would be offline' 😀 We also know that fire & floods happen every 2-3 years .. and prepare themselves accordingly - that is - as usual

Australian Energy Council Chief Executive Sarah McNamara said “we’re unlikely to see any price rises in the short-term as a result of Liddell closing.” “That’s because Liddell’s closure has been known by the market for some eight years now, so it’s been factored into contract prices for quite some time,” Ms McNamara told Sky News Australia. What a joke. Its up yours to all of us so the climate rich can get richer. LiberalAus will enter a 10-year shutdown period culminating in its retirement :) Can anyone tell me where all the power to charge all the EV’s at night is coming from considering the sun doesn’t shine then and the wind blows less. I’m buying a generator. Mass blackouts incoming.

Liddell shutdown a test of Australia’s orderly energy transitionPassing the Liddell test would be a good omen. But politically created obstacles risk making the challenging transition ahead even more difficult than it already is. The closure of Liddell is not a sufficient test. Eraring's closure might be. We deal with cumulative effect of losing base load, weather-independent, synchronous power. Liddell's closure, if it goes ok, will be presented as a victory for RE; it is not.
