These tycoons, who include one of Malaysia’s biggest bankers, an early Berkshire Hathaway backer and an Italian eyewear kingpin, hailed from 17 countries. They were worth a combined $147 billion, measured at the time of their death. Of the 29, 12 were U.S. citizens. The only other country to see multiple billionaires pass away was Austria, with two, including the wealthiest person to die since March 2022: Dietrich Mateschitz , who cofounded Red Bull and turned it into an energy drinks-sports marketing powerhouse.
An additional five billionaires dropped from the 2023 ranking, after appearing on the 2022 ranking, becausediscovered they had died prior to the 2022 list, meaning a total of 34 billionaires fell off the 2023 list because of death.
