The Australian Energy Regulator said the government intervention in the energy market, including price caps, should mitigate electricity price increases in 2023.

contributed to a fall in future wholesale prices this year, Ms Savage said she expected this would flow through to lower retail prices increases from July 1.

It comes as the AER boss revealed the number of energy customers being put onto hardship programs had increased over the past year as energy prices soared.Ms Savage said there had been an increase from 73,543 in June last year to 78,561 in the September quarter, the latest figures available.Last year, the AER approved price increases of up to 18 per cent in NSW and 12 per cent in Queensland from July 1.

It comes as Clean Energy Finance Corporation chief executive Ian Learmonth said the corporation would continue to fund new wind and solar projects, even though they were now established technologies.Mr Learmonth said the current funding environment had changed in the past year, with rising construction costs and higher interest rates.

After questioning from Coalition senator Hollie Hughes, Mr Learmonth was adamant funding for wind and solar would not detract from other new emerging technologies, such as battery storage.“No it doesn’t. We’re selective about the renewable energy projects we are supporting. We are not going out in a blanket position and supporting every wind and solar project,” he said.

Authority chief executive Brad Archer said it had yet to decide what temperature increase would be modelled ahead of the 2035 target, but he expected various scenarios would be modelled.
