Treasurer Jim Chalmers has told Australians they can expect a slight relief in their power bills as a result of Labor's pre-Christmas energy market intervention.

Before Christmas the Albanese government passed emergency legislation to lower energy prices through a $125 per tonne cap on coal – to be imposed by Queensland and New South Wales – and a $12 a gigajoule limit on gas for 18 months.that power bills were expected to soar by at least 35 per cent in 2023, after rising by about 20 per cent in the second half of 2022.

“Our plan is designed to take some of the edge off these energy price rises and we're really encouraged to see that's the case,” Mr Chalmers told ABC Insiders on Sunday morning. The Coalition voted against the energy package which also provided $1.5 in federal assistance for bill relief, calling for the government to split the legislation as it did not support the price cap on gas.

He cited a statement from AGL to the Australia Stock Exchange that the “the impact of government intervention contributed to a sharp decline in forward electricity prices”. However, Deputy Liberal leader Sussan Ley has questioned the new analysis of ASX future data by the Treasury, calling for the government to be honest with Australians about their power prices.

Sure we can.

Yay, just what I needed, a 10 cent cheaper energy bill to come!!!

And people still voted for Labor even with their long history of failures No point blaming these clowns since the people themselves put them in their position.

So an annual bill of around $2,000 will only go up by $460 instead of $700? Gee thanks for nothing

Only a lightweight like chalmers could call a 23% increase rather than 36% “relief”. Exhibit A of life in the bubble. Wanker

Slimy DimSim Jim spewing out more bull💩

We’ll call fake news on that ,inflation has already wiped out anything they are going to do, it’s real simple jimbo, increase supply and cut this net zero nonsense ,but we all know you have no intention of doing that your only intentions are to destroy the people of Australia

Price caps = lower investment = curbed production = supply constraints = higher domestic prices for longer. The global price has plummeted but we’re still paying more. Same ol labor. No idea.

💯🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

I am still waiting for my promised $275 cheque.

Tell me why my bill has increased 45% since the last bill. Live alone no air-conditioning. Please tell me how this happened

😂😂😂 slight relief is like a slight erection. Just a thought really.

So the promise of $275 was a furphy then.

Bs. It isn't 'relief' if they've already increased 3 times the amount he thinks they'll be saving us.

please tell him don’t lie

Pretty sure that's not how the election promise was worded?

I suppose we all know that all persuasions of Political Parties have little to no influence over the Market Place, or Reserve Bank decisions 🙄🙄🙄why don’t they just come out and admit it 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

An artificial price relief, they interfered with the free marked, just wait and see once the cap is lifted. Price will sky rocket

Oh goody, now I can buy that packet of jubes I have been eyeing off for months

Which decade

Wait till Wednesday and he will back flip. He always does.

Jimbo more interested in his dissertation about absorbing private businesses..... yes it's time for socialism.

So you're going to use our money to relieve a problem you caused?

What planet is this clown living in? Who has actually seen any household relief? All hype and no real results.

But I’ve already received a letter from my provider advising I should expect a $700 increase this year 👎

Now it's 'slight relief' only. Sounds like a bowel treatment.

Gee, thanks Jim.

Relief Relief would be the power bill cost actually dropping, not the percentage increase figure dropping!!! Time to gotothenaughtcorner Mr Chalmers ....oh, and purchase a dictionary once you're out.

The 'slight relief' is the period between when you received your last bill and the next bill.

Jimbo is raving about going one tiny step forward after sending Australia 10 steps backwards.

Sounds like 💩 to me .

I have a plan to make my bills less , disconnected the gas and put on more solar

Cool story bro

There is no plan Stay out of it. You’re making it worse

Bullshit ! Exploding bills due to the weather change scam !
