The first round of in-person negotiations for the US-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity will be in Brisbane next month.

The accord aims to reduce barriers on the trade of environmental goods and services and encourage carbon trading. It could also pave the way for Singapore to import Australian hydrogen and provide a model for the rest of the region.

IPEF was initially dismissed as a half-hearted effort by Washington to address concerns it had neglected economic engagement with the region since it backed out of what is now known as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership in 2016.Ministerial-level talks in Brisbane, starting on December 10, will still have to convince Indo-Pacific nations that the IPEF can deliver value, given the market access to the US promised but never materialised.

“So there is a lot of enthusiasm for supply chain discussions, but that topic is obviously related to trade, as well as infrastructure and decarbonisation.”
