West Australian Premier Mark McGowan says the federal government should look to his state and overseas to find a solution to surging electricity prices, which are forecast to rise 56 per cent in the next 18 months.

In 2006, WA introduced a mechanism that required gas exporters to keep at least 15 per cent of what they produced for local useLabor's budget is tipping electricity prices to increase 56 per cent in the next 18 months

Mr McGowan says it is because of this gas reservation policy that Western Australians have "reliable electricity, affordable gas, [and a] reliable supply," and "none of the sort of chaos you're seeing in the eastern states"."I think there's a pretty good model here in Western Australia," Mr McGowan said.

"Industry didn't like it at the time but now, it's seen as a wonderful initiative and, across the board, it's accepted by industry — both the oil and gas industry itself, but also other industries that are downstream users of it, particularly down here in Perth.

Excellent foresight by Mr Carpenter. We should go a step further and effect annual caps on non-renewable resource extraction generally or the Chinese etc. will consume what's left within decades with mining continuing to monopolise labour resources over renewable industries.

WA has long had a domestic gas policy dating back into the early 80’s when the North West Shelf project was originally developed.

hows that liberal privatisation going for easteners!! still think its a good deal ,that we say you were duped into, they sold out your future yet you enjoyed that , so enjoy this!!. of course you get Gross profits when the monopoly isnt your own government!!.

It that's true that's a disaster. I expect greater totalitarianism from the government and that social strife would be inevitable now.

Still strange that a country with all largest quantities of resources on the planet with only 25 million people r still broke, have we given it away to multinationals that don’t pay tax here Privatisation of energy is a pilfering sham auspol wapol

This is just rank greed, and the gov is complicit. They could put a cap on prices, but they won't because they work for the wealthy class. When are people going to wake up, the gov does not serve its constituents, it works for and is controlled by the wealthy. IL Duce Albo shill

Take heed Mr Albanese.

Thank God for a Labor premier instigating this 15% gas reservation for WA.

Which politicians and bureaucrats are going to be brought to account for such incompetent handling of this mess in the eastern states over the last couple of decades ?

What? No picture of Dan! Waste of an bad headline Ita.

I'm sure the rest of Australia could do what W.A. did. But it'll come with a trade-off of allowing greater mining and exploration.

Company's are ripping people off tax them
