In a world shaped by climate change, could cultural burning practices be the key to fighting catastrophic bushfires?

abc.net.au/news/indigenous-women-travel-united-states-cultural-burning-exchange/101533778Indigenous women from all over the world have learnt cultural burning practices from Australia as part of a unique firefighting program held in the United States.

Kylee Clubb and Chloe Swiney were sent to California to take part in a cultural burning program with other First Nations' women. In August, the region experienced one of its largest and deadliest wildfires, which killed several people, burnt down homes and razed hundreds of square kilometres of land.Kylee Crabb, who works as a rural firefighter on the Atherton Tablelands, west of Cairns, said she believed that people were becoming more receptive to drawing on First Nations knowledge when it comes to preventing devastating bushfires.

"I don't like using the word mitigation, because it is a Western concept, but I do like the idea of prescribed burning and cultural burning. While traditional burning practices are becoming more commonplace in Australia, it is a different story in the United States, where drawing on traditional knowledge to prevent catastrophic fires is a relatively new concept..

If the women are strong enough to carry a fully grown male fire fighter out of a fire I wish them well.

It's nice of the indigenous Canadians to help their neighbours out.

ABC says 'in a world shaped by climate change'. We make climate change. Climate change does not 'shape' the world, it COOKS the world. This normalization of climate change has got to stop.

The first nation is Australia.

Surely Chloe must be Anglo or Irish or European by heritage too. The First Nations were never White in appearance!

What about Aus? haven't heard much about this sought of management here. After the fires in 2019-20 they should have started regrowth management of the burnt-out areas, as they should in all burnt-out areas, but they don't.
