A new app that analyses how much power each household appliance is using has the potential to save Aussie families thousands. 9News

Using the system, Australians can monitor how much power their households are using, turn off appliances remotely, and optimise when they turn on to take advantage of cheaper off-peak rates. The system best works with households that have solar panels installed but can be used in any home that uses smart devices to ensure they're consuming electricity at the lowest cost.

The technology was developed by solar technology company Lightsource BP, who claim the technology could deliver savings of hundreds of dollars to users."The hub diverts excess solar energy to significant loads to ensure owners are using every last ray of sunshine that generates electricity for their home, and the app gives them complete visibility and control," says Lightsource BP Business Development Manager Phil Kwok.

Sydney resident Chris Blake was an early adopter of the technology, and has already saved hundreds by optimising his home to use low-cost off-peak electricity alongside with solar energy his home has already generated. CEO of the Smart Energy Council John Grimes says the market is rapidly moving towards systems that allow homeowners more control over their power use.
