The International Energy Agency released a "wake up call" saying countries who wish to get to net zero emissions by 2050 will need to rely less on coal and more on carbon capture technology according to Labor MP Joel Fitzgibbon. “What the International Energy Agency is saying, look, all of you countries – and in particular it’s talking to Europeans – are making commitments to zero net by 2050 and if you’re serious about that this is what you will need to do,” he told Sky News.
“The other point it makes of course is if you’re going to get there, you’re going to be very heavily reliant on carbon capture and storage technologies so it’s a bit of a wake call to all these people making commitments but without really backing them up with policy.” Mr Fitzgibbon said Australia was “uniquely placed” to reach the goal and having targets will help to guide us and get us to reach the commitment on time.
