Thousands of Sydneysiders are packing out George Street at Town Hall, demanding stronger climate action as bushfires continue to rage across the state

Thousands of Sydneysiders began the march from Town Hall to Hyde Park on Wednesday evening, packing out George Street to demand stronger climate action as bushfires continue to rage across the state.

Buses are diverting away from Elizabeth Street and Park Street due to the march. Up to nine bus stops are being missed. Some buses are delayed by up to 30 minutes.Chloe Rafferty, one of the organisers, said she was angry about the lack of climate action from all levels of government."The state is angry, Sydney is angry," she said.

Fire Brigade Employees Union State Secretary Leighton Drury has been a firefighter for 20 years and said the fires ravaging NSW are the “worst we’ve had in decades”."We’re on the bones of our ass,” he said. “There are now fewer professional firefighters than there were in 2011". "We’ve got no water, a state and country in drought, professional firefighters are spread thin and our volunteers are exhausted".

"The city was choking in smoke yesterday": Firefighter Monte Partridge, right, and colleague Chris Gilpin.

Good start get off your mobiles and put in rubbish bin

Of course, not helping the poor people in the fires

A few thousand are angry... out of how many Sydney-Siders? Some perspective please.

What do they want exactly? Do they even know? O

It does no good in a NAZI state. The response will just be to arrest them for protesting.

Too late to stop the bushfires getting worse for years to come, but not too late to stop them getting even worse.

We know sydney is angry, but the fact is when labour had climate change policy at the last election all the old, decently well off and wealthy voted liberal party. You reap what you sow.

Very diverse, representative, normal, average looking Sydney crowd. Most of them clean cut in office wear, plenty of suits, shirts, etc. But you find the one weirdo in 20,000 dressed as a koala and publish that instead Laura_R_chung TheMattBungard. Deliberately misleading much?

If we can send people to the moon why can’t we collect rain water when it gushes through the suburban streets during a storm & deposit it where desperately needed ? We need to start doing things to make a difference immediately, think practically, stop talking, start doing !!

They should be protesting at the Chinese and Indian Embassies.

And millions aren’t....

Not just Sydney

FYI-humans cannot control weather patterns. stupidity

Nothing wrong with non violent protests .a good cause.

Suppose they all walked there.

Missed my child pickup as no buses could get through....what a bloody mess! Already in strife with the ex and now this lot want to stop the hardworking battlers getting home to their kids?!?

Just got the record - most of our fires Sunshine Coast were lit deliberately by humans or caused by human error. Also years of cutting back sound and practical back burning to reduce fuel. Which bit if this is climate change or did I miss something ?

And Sydney’s NYE firework is still going ahead 😹

So exactly what is this 'stronger climate action' you are demanding of Australia

If not at Indian or Chinese consulates then you're not serious.

Nowran air quality looks good in that photo

Look at all these whinging whining lefty city slickers complaining about the smoke while people are losing thier life’s and homes etc where the fires are at they are lucky the smoke is there only problem

This is hilarious. Can you see all the mobile phones being used by these climate warriors? Gold, absolute gold.

darrenhayes Whatever works to save the planet.... however I don’t think there’s anything wrong with back burning though as it saves people and houses😊

Fat lot of good that will do. Go out and fight a fire or help clean up. Anger won’t help.

Bludgers

adamajacoby How wonderful! I feel some hope in the power of the people. The beginning

Yes because these marches work. Dopes.

Very soon Pm Scott Morrison Liberals/National government will if the Senates One Nation and others, negotiating with the Coalition Gov, even in total secret to out law any demonstration against the Coalition Governments, its authority agencies and its superpower Companies, banks,

MayneReport The koalas are screaming in agony as they are engulfed by fire. Bloody hell. No wonder we are angry.

Sydney is angry? And yet will vote LNP in.

🤦🏽‍♂️

Poor one side people who have been blindsided. Time for sensible debate

.:: There needs to be a National Debate on T.V. Re climate change. .. People have only heard one side. SKY presenters and learned panel V. The Rest ABC panel. The Prime Minister has looked and listened to both sides and has made his Decision ..time for debate 😳

adamajacoby

Triplejay58 Wonderful to see, especially for those who would be there if they could, but are there in spirit 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

With all these climate protesters, how the fuck did morrison get in?

I love that people are getting serious about the environment, just that i don't think it's completely a government sided issue. Like what if at the end of the march you had to hand in your iPhones and cancel your next trip to Bali? The issue is 2 sided.

There is a need to grow necessary fire resistant vegetation, grasses, shrubs, Cati plants and trees that will not dry up and become fuel for brush fires: Creating an almost fire resistant green-world

And to think they will all be walking home as they are not allowed to use a car as it gives off carbon emissions

Poor diddums! Further up the coast we have been dealing with raging fires, devastation and smoke for weeks. Now it effects the city dwellers they are protesting. Give me a break!

A street full of idiots who think the government or scomo controls the weather above our heads. You think if he met all the demands the bushfires would stop? The weather would cool by 10’C and we’d get rain very second day? FFS it’s a global problem. Target the culprits.

Get used to seeing more of the same.. Our work has just begun..

Sure are a lot of folk who could fight fires there... JustSaying

darrenhayes When are Americans going to pack the streets and demand fair elections and a sane president?

No effect at all. Really these people are unreal!

Chief zealots from the Green socialist Left and their media manipulated disciples.

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

A couple of days of back burning and a bad wind change... Welcome to what the rest of the state has been dealing with. Must has interfered with the air conditioning and wifi for everyone to get so upset..... Snowflakes

MichaelEMann That is a lot more realistic than listening to a bunch of Ayn Rand trollers who suggest that its 'Communist' for communities to team up on emergency preparedness, and that only individual actions should be considered when dealing with this sort of crisis. Right-wingery is bonkers

U r protesting to the wrong people..if u r fair dinkum (& u aren’t a professional protestor looking for a day off work) go to China & India & protest there & try & make a difference instead being an annoyance & disrupting our lives

So I guess two nights of NYE fireworks will be recommended by ScoMo?

Prove the correlation between arson and ClimateChange. And... go. 😏

What does arson have to do with climate change?

CamelSanctuary When Victoria burnt, it was Victoria's problem, and the Victorian government answered for it. When NSW burns, suddenly it's Australia's problem, the NSW government doesn't make the news. And I couldn't be arsed even to be angry. I just want them to fix it.

Thank you to all the Aussie’s that made it to Sydney today and representing those of us who can’t be there. Thank you, thank you, thank you. ✌️

Are the ones who marched the ones who don’t allow back burning by the RFS so these type of bushfires don’t happen? Considering the loss of life, bushland and property in 1994, I don’t remember marching in the streets back then.

Scott n his minister cabals must be shitting themselves to see that d public demand action not just platitude At Pacific forum n COP25 we can see his arrogance to stick with coal mates

'Thousands of sydney siders' is all of sydney is it? Learn something new everyday 🙄

MayneReport Meanwhile, the Denier In Chief and a few cronies live it up at a 'no media, please' exclusive Sydney Polo Club function while all the 'quiet Australians' they don't give a shit about, choke on smoke and flee unprecedented megafires. How good is polo? (Thanks Ronni Salt).

Sure Sydney is angry, but is it as angry as the hundreds of riot cops tasked with (ostensibly) keeping people off the tram tracks?

Well done everyone who could make it today. Wish I could have made it.

Election predictor ScottMorrisonMP - how good is evisceration?
