The system showed near-optimal real-time performance which significantly reduced energy loss during outages caused by various scenarios.

In this rapidly advancing world with artificial intelligence controlling the pace, innovators seem to have come up with another new model powered by AI with the ambition of preventing power outages.

Dr. Jie Zhang, associate professor of mechanical engineering at the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science, stated, “Our goal is to find the optimal path to send power to the majority of users as quickly as possible. But more research is needed before this system can be implemented.”

As per the university, graph machine learning involves describing a network’s topology, the way the various components are arranged in relation to each other, and how electricity moves through the system.Tested on different network setups, the system demonstrated near-optimal real-time performance, considerably reducing energy loss during outages and working effectively across various scenarios.

Tests also showed that the AI system can reroute electricity in milliseconds – much faster in contrast to the current human-controlled systems that can take minutes to hours.Dr. Yulia Gel, study co-author and professor of mathematical sciences in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, also emphasized the role of network topology which he says may play a critical role.
