The Coalition is defying an expert report on how long it would take to establish nuclear power in Australia.
In a response to a state parliamentary inquiry into introducing nuclear energy, New South Wales’ Chief Scientist Hugh Durrant-Whyte wrote it would take decades to build up the appropriate workforce and supply chains. Shadow Climate Change and Energy Minister Ted O'Brien hit back, saying he is engaged with experts who say Australia could establish nuclear power within a decade.
The Coalition is understood to be looking at coal-fired power station sites to host nuclear reactors but is yet to reveal the full costings.The Coalition is due to launch its nuclear policy ahead of the budget reply speech in May.
